On Saturday 1st October 2011, the usually quiet and peaceful Marriott Royal St. Kitts Golf Course was transformed into a lively and colourful panorama of sporting hopefuls and families looking forward to the opportunity for a stroll on the immaculate and normally private, course. It was the beautiful setting for the Second Annual St. Kitts 5k Run and 2k Family Walk to benefit the St. Christopher Children’s Home.

The mix of ages and nationalities were all bound together with a common cause – the charitable desire to help those less fortunate than themselves. The power of collective, positive thought combined with irrepressible big heartedness of a wide cross-section of the public, made for a great start to the event.

The Governor-General, Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, GCMB, OBE and the Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Denzil Douglas, along with other government ministers and officials took time out of their busy schedules to attend and cheer on the participants. After an energetic warm up, led by the inimitable Mr. X of Shiggidy Shack fame, the Prime Minister started the race and the runners streamed out across the track like a colourful banner.

Then, it was the turn of the walkers to step up and without exception there were smiles on all the faces as the children and adults alike, set off with their numbers proudly pinned to their chests.

After the completing the respective courses, the hot and hungry participants were treated to a magnificent meal - Marriott style, which was donated by the world renowned Resort and Casino. This retreat was complemented by a series of activities for the children and lively music to entertain over six hundred (600) people.

Mr. Sebastian Mottram, Chairman of the St. Christopher Children’s Home, said “It wasn’t just the participants who answered the children’s prayers: the astounding generosity of the sponsors proved that the commercial and private sectors were also committed to the future well-being of children at risk in our Community.”

Mottram continued “The final financial results are still being calculated but it is clear that the sum raised this year will be enough to run the home for twelve (12) months. It is hoped that the great momentum generated will continue next year and for all the years that the children of St Kitts/Nevis need a place of refuge. Arguably more than ever there is a need for continued investment in today’s children and working with the Social Services, the Home provides a crucial link in the chain.”

The St. Christopher’s Home and Service League acknowledges and sincerely thanks all the business houses and civic minded individuals who contributed to the success of this year’s event.

The St. Christopher Children’s Home was constructed and established by the St. Christopher Children’s Home and Service League Association Limited, which was developed in September 1935. The Children’s Home was officially opened in January 1950.

The home is a place of safety for children, up to nineteen (19) years of age, who are at risk in the Community and who do not otherwise have a place to live. The Home relies entirely for its funding on voluntary donations and Corporate sponsorship.
